Kenya Hit by Shortage in Beans as Traders Eye Harvest From Uganda

There is a general shortage of beans in most of the Kenyan markets leading to the skyrocketing of prices for such varieties as Canadian Beans and Rosecoco. Traders are now eyeing the harvest season in Uganda.

The decline in beans has seen prices in major towns go up with the highest being the Canadia Beans trading at 8,800 shillings per 90-kilogram bag in Kisumu followed by Mwitemania at a high of 8,100 shillings for a 90-kilogram bag in Eldoret.

The price of maize in Nairobi remains 2,500 shillings for a 90-kilogram bag, as the Kenya National Cereals Board continue to buy maize at 2,300 shillings for the same 90-kilogram bag in Kitale.

Tanzania continues to export Dolichos-Njahi, Pigeon peas, and Yellow beans into Kenya. A 90-kilogram bag is being sold as follows in selected markets: 11,250 shillings in Eldoret, 10,800 shillings in Kitale, 9,800 shillings in Nairobi, 6,300 shillings in Mombasa, 5,400 shillings in Nakuru and 4,500 shillings in Oloitoktok.
