ERC Reduces Price of Super Petrol with Kerosene Increasing by 10.71 Shillings More

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has released the new and recalculated prices of fuel that will take effect from September 21 to 14 October following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s proposal of the reduction of VAT tax on fuel from 16 percent to 8 percent.

The new prices of the pump have also taken into account the anti-adulteration levy of 18 shillings per liter on Kerosene to align itself with the Finance Bill 2018.

In Nairobi, the new prices of the pump for super petrol will decrease by 8.80 shillings whereas that of diesel will reduce by 7.35 shillings. Kerosene, on the other hand, will cost 10.71 shillings more.

This means that super petrol will sell at 116.79 shillings in Nairobi, with diesel going for 108.12 shillings and Kerosene at 108.41 shillings per liter.

The prices in Mombasa will sell a little bit cheaper with super petrol retailing at 114.15 shillings, with diesel and kerosene selling at 105.50 shillings 105.78 shillings.

The revised fuel price might be celebrated by some but it will affect poor households more, especially those that depend on paraffin as cooking and lighting fuel. What more can be said when the brunt of law changes passed amidst confusion by the MPs has sealed the deal?
