Legumes Retail High in Eldoret Compared to Other Towns as Njahi Hits Shs.130 a Kilo

August may just be the best month to sell your dolichos (njahi) as the price of the product across several towns averages 7766.67 shillings with Eldoret being the highest at 11,700 shillings for a 90-kilogram bag.

In Nairobi, a 90kg bag of njahi goes for 8550 shillings making it the second highest followed by Isiolo where the price stands at 7,200 shillings. Malindi and Mombasa aren’t far behind with the same amount of njahi retailing at 7,000 and 6,750 shillings. The lowest recorded price, in this case, was Nakuru with a bag of 90kg going for 5,400 shillings.

Although not as profitable as dolichos in August, other legumes, beans, the Rosecoco variety retails at an average of 6141.67 shillings for a 90-kilogram bag. Again, Eldoret remains the best market with a retail price of 7,650 shillings for a 90kg bag.

Nairobi follows suit with the same weight selling at 6,750 shillings followed by Isiolo and Malindi both at 6,300 shillings, then Nakuru and finally Mombasa with 5,000 and 4,850 respectively.

Of the three types of reviewed bean variety, the Mwitemania type retailed low in all the towns except Eldoret that maintained as similar price as that of the Rosecoco variety; 7,650 shillings. Mwitemania beans averaged 5,258.33 shillings with the lowest recorded price being Nakuru, which stood at 3,600 shillings.

Mombasa and Malindi also registered a low retail price of Mwitemania at 3,800 shillings and 4,800 shillings respectively. In Isiolo, the 90kg bag of the item goes for 5,400 shillings as Nairobi becomes the second highest at 6,300 shillings for the same.
