Ministry of Interior Most Prone To Corruption – EACC

The Ministry of Interior under Dr. Fred Matiang’i is the most prone to corruption in Kenya in a survey released by the Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

According to EACC, Interior and Coordination of National Government Ministry is leading among the corruption-prone ministries with 64.7 percent.

The second ministry prone to corruption is the Ministry of Health at 27.8 percent followed by the ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development at 23.9 percent.

The survey comes at a time EACC together with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution are under pressure to prosecute the rampant run-away corruption that has hit the country in the recent months.

EACC says it conducted the survey in 47 counties with 5,977 households taking part. 63.5 percent of the respondents said that they sought services in form of asking for information, assistance, requesting for a document or other administrative procedures.

The number of people who admitted to have paid a bribe to get services has increased to 62 percent from 46 percent recorded in 2016.

27 percent of those interviewed said that they were explicitly asked for a bribe while seeking services from the government, 9.8 percent said they were implicitly asked for bribe while 2.1 percent voluntarily offered a bribe to get a service.

Mandera and Kisumu Counties emerged as the most corrupt counties in Kenya replacing Nairobi and Turkana that were in the similar position in 2016.

Kenya Police and the National Police Service were the most corrupt institution with 13.7 percent followed by public hospitals with 9.8 percent. Kenya Revenue Authority and National Land Commission came it at 8.2 and 7.3 percent respectively. Other corrupt institutions include the National Transport and Safety Authority with 4.9 percent and the Immigration Department with 4.3 percent.

According to EACC, Kenyans consider corruption as the main problem facing the country at the moment at 43.6 percent followed by poverty with 37 percent and unemployment with 32.2 percent.
