If by any chance you have taken your kids upcountry for the holidays, and their grandparents happen to send them back to you after the holidays with chicken, as is the norm with some Kenyan families, prepare to be taxed 25 shillings for every chicken.

The Nairobi County Government has in the recent past been on the news for its proposals of new taxes and levies that will be imposed on the residents of the city should they be passed into law by the county assembly.

Added to the list of those proposals is the most recent where Nairobians will have to pay 25 shillings brought to the city from upcountry.

On August 5, a bill was tabled to have Nairobians pay 50 shillings for every chicken slaughtered near their houses.

Starting June, The Nairobi City County’s Finance Bill 2019 has been proposing new taxes and levies that if approved, city residents will be subjected to heavy taxes.

Some of the things proposed for taxation under the finance bill include pets, where residents who keep dogs and cats will have to pay 1000 shillings annually for the pet’s health inspection.

Apart from poultry and pets, Nairobi households will be expected to pay 2000 shillings annually for fire certificate and 300 and 600 shillings garbage collection fee for the middle class and high-end estates respectively.

From the fire certification fee, the county government will raise at least 3 billion shillings if all the 1.5 families in Nairobi pay the fee.

Motorists and car owners will also have their parking fees increased as the county administration claims that they enjoy services that they do not pay for leading the county to fail to achieve goals.

According to Nairobi Finance and Economic Planning Executive, Charles Kerich, the county government is looking to raise 35.2 billion shillings revenue for its annual budget and it intends to do so by imposing these and other taxes on its residents and companies.
