Italian and Serie A soccer bigwigs AS Roma club has launched a new Twitter Account that will broadcast all their events in Swahili.

AS Roma’s new Swahili account aims at reaching and interacting with its African fan base adequately, especially those living in the East African regions like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and even the South African regions where Swahili is more prevalent.

Announcing their new Swahili twitter account, the Serie A giants said their idea was inspired by requests from fans in Africa more specifically Kenyans after the club had congratulated Eliud Kipchoge for winning the INEOS challenge on Saturday.

AS Roma now becomes the first European side to launch a social media account that communicates and interacts with fans using the Swahili language.

#ASRoma has today become the first major European football club to launch an official Swahili Twitter account,” AS Roma said in their twitter account.

“We’re delighted to launch AS Roma Swahili on Twitter today. After we launched a Pidgin account in March, we’ve been inundated with requests from fans in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and from other Eastern and South-Eastern African countries asking for an official Swahili account,” said Paul Rogers, Head of Strategy at AS Roma.

“Considering the passion the fans have for European football, it’s actually surprising that no football club outside of Africa has attempted to communicate daily in Swahili and Pidgin before on social media,” Paul Rogers added.

Interestingly, after the announcement, AS Roma’s Swahili twitter account became the club’s first official account to gain high tweet impressions.

“With 10,600 Likes, this tweet by @ASRomaSwahili is the biggest ever debut tweet by an  #ASRoma account!”

This is not the first time AS Roma is creating a positive impression in the minds of Africans as it had also assisted in finding a missing child through their campaign on social media.

The Italian side, in conjunction with other child support charities; National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Telefono Azzurro have so far helped find two missing children through running social media campaigns.

AS Roma joined forces with Missing Child Kenya back in  July to help find missing children and their marriage bore fruits as it helped find a 13-year-old boy who had gone missing for a couple of days.
