Heavy Rainfall Disrupts KCPE Exams in West Pokot

Some schools in West Pokot have been forced to begin the Kenya certificate of Primary Education Exams a bit late due to heavy rains that continue to affect most parts of the area.

The heavy downpour has wreaked havoc in most parts of West Pokot, making some roads impassable thus delaying the distribution of KCPE exam materials in time.

According to the West Pokot County Education Director Jacob Onyiego, some roads in West Pokot were rendered impassable after River Kasei burst its banks forcing exam distributors to wait for a while for the water to level down.

Exam Supervisors had to walk for long distances or use alternative routes to reach the exam centers following the heavy downpours that lasted for the better part of Monday night.

As a result of the heavy rains, at least 17 schools in North Pokot sub-county had to start their exams a bit late as they were waiting for the exam materials as well as the supervisors.

“The vehicles cannot traverse the route, the vehicles are stuck in the mud, examination materials of about six schools have not been delivered in Pokot South sub-county,” Mr. Onyiego said.

Mr. Onyiego stated that the exam stakeholders would seek alternative solutions to ensure that the situation is dealt with as soon as possible. “We are having a problem with transporting the examinations materials to some schools due to impassable roads. If it continues to rain will have to contact Kenya national examination council to send us a chopper.”

The Government had earlier announced that it was well prepared for the National Exams and measures were put in place to handle any inconveniences and ensure exams are done successfully.

The Government said that it would use choppers, and boats to supply exam materials to areas with impassable roads to ensure exams are not delayed. Ambulances and emergency kits are also available to handle medical issues, especially for pregnant girls.
