KEBS Lifts Ban On Kifaru And Dola Maize Flour Products

BY Juma · November 21, 2019 06:11 am

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has lifted the ban on two maize flour products; Kifaru and Dola saying they are now fit for human consumption.

KEBS had suspended 5 maize flour products, among them Kifaru and Dola for allegedly having high levels of aflatoxin believed to cause cancer in humans.

According to KEBS, the suspension has been lifted after the two millers withdrew their “poisonous” products from the market and replaced them with ones that are fit for human consumption.

A random check during the time the two products were banned showed that most retailers still stocked them on the shelves, further watering down KEBS affirmations.

KEBS says future products for the two maize flour products will follow the set guidelines to ensure that they are fit for human consumption.

“KEBS inspectors thereafter, conducted inspections to review and determine the level of effectiveness of the controls put in place by your firm,” said KEBS.

The five maize flour brands that had been suspended by KEBS are:

  •  Dola Maize Meal
  • Kifaru Maize Meal
  • Starehe Maize Meal
  • 210 Two Ten Maize Meal
  • Jembe Maize Meal

KEBS accused the two brands for having “higher aflatoxin levels” than the recommended.

Here is a statement from KEBS suspending the 5 maize meal products:

Soko Maize Meal was suspended in Kiambu County by the County Government of Kiambu for the same reasons of having higher aflatoxin levels. KEBS is yet to speak on the ban of Soko Maize Meal.
