Pumwani Maternity Outpatient Unit To Start Functioning

Pumwani Maternity Hospital is set to begin offering outpatient services starting Wednesday, 27th November 2019, in a bid to improve affordable health care, according to the County Government of Nairobi.

City Hall reports that the installment of the outpatient unit is complete and has been fitted with the necessary equipment and drugs worth two million shillings, ready for patients who would like to seek their services.

According to county administration and Health chief officer Mohammed Sahal, the installment of the outpatient unit is going to enable common ailments such as malaria and typhoid be handled with ease, at the same time avoiding unnecessary referrals that health givers in the facility have had to do in the past.

Health chief officer Sahal said that following the upgrading of the facility, new mothers will be able to receive affordable and comprehensive pre-natal and post-natal care, while there will be laboratory services, physiotherapy, and screening services in the outpatient unit.

Sahal was positive that medical services in the city were going to improve, given that the county has set aside 21 percent of its 2019/2020 financial budget to medical facilities upgrade.

Pumwani Maternity Hospital upgrade especially comes after years of being in Kenyans’ bad books for poor services, which heightened when 12 bodies of infants were found preserved in polythene bags due to lack of body storage facilities.

After the September 2018 incident, City Hall set out to clean Pumwani Hospital’s mess and in the process improved other public healthcare facilities, among them Mama Lucy Hospital.

The county saw a breast milk bank opened in Pumwani Maternity Hospital which is the country’s largest maternity facility and had digital payment services in all public facilities in the county.

The county has promised to continue improving the state of health and revealed that the 7.4 billion shillings set aside for health, will go a long way in upgrading the standards of city hospitals and cater for the basic needs of hospital staff so that their services are good and retained.
