Shortage Of Tomatoes, Eggs Hits Nairobi As Demand Doubles

BY Juma · December 24, 2019 08:12 am

There is a shortage of eggs, tomatoes and onions in most parts of Nairobi leading to the spiking of prices.

As Kenyans head to Christmas, Nairobians have seen the prices of tomatoes double in most parts due to high demand and low supply.

In most parts, one tomato is going for between 15 and 20 shillings up from 5 shillings last month. In Allsopps, for instance, a tomato is going for 25 shillings.

“There are no tomatoes. We have to travel long distances to look for them. We are buying them at double the price than it was a month ago. The price is not coming down soon,” said Peris Wairimu, a retailer at Allsopps.

The price of eggs has gone up by more than 30 percent. A crate of eggs is now going for between 390 and 420 shillings in most parts up from between 260 and 300 shillings.

A crate of the Kienyeji eggs has skyrocketed to between 1,000 and 1,100 shillings, up from between 600 and 720 shillings.

“People are buying eggs in large numbers. The supply is low and we have to increase the prices. If you have eggs to sell, this is the time,” says Ambrose Ochieng.

The price of most vegetables has gone up this Christmas season, showing just how Kenyans will dig deep into their pockets to put something on their tables this festive season.

Those who will want to enjoy chicken meat this Christmas season will have to pay more too. The price of a “Kuku Kienyeji” is averaging at between 1,000 and 1,500 shillings in most parts of Nairobi up from between 600 and 800 shillings.

This Christmas is likely to be the most uncelebrated because of the hard economic situation among Kenyans. Stats show that 60 percent of Kenyans are poorer this Christmas compared to the previous one.
