Death Toll Rises to 19 in 13 Days After Al-Shabaab Kills Three Teachers

Three teachers have been confirmed dead in the wee morning hours of 13th January 2020 after al-Shabaab militants hit Kamuthey village in Garissa County.

The three teachers who have been confirmed dead after being shot by the al-Shabaab are non-locals which means they are not of Somali descent and had traveled to Garissa County to teach probably after being sent there by their employer the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC).

The al-Shabaab militants who shot dead the three teachers in the early Monday morning attack in Kamuthey village in Garissa County were targeting a communication mast and a nearby police camp.

Al-Shabaab attacked a Safaricom mast at Kamuthey which is located 40 kilometers South of Garissa town within Fafi area and brought it down weakening communication in the area before attacking a teacher’s residential area.

Al-Shabaab killed three non-local teachers and abducted one local teacher but spared the life of one non-local female nurse under unclear circumstances.

There has been a worrying rise of al-Shabaab attacks on Kenyan soil that has since seen 19 people dead following various attacks in Lamu and Garissa attacks and arrests in Nairobi and Nanyuki Airbase in Laikipia County.

Attacks Witnessed in 13 Days of January 2020 Has Left 19 People Dead

In the early morning of 2nd January 2020, al-Shabaab shot dead three people and injured several others after ambushing a Mombasa-Lamu bus amongst several other buses.

The Mombasa-Lamu bus was attacked at Nyongoro which is near Witu town between Mombasa and Lamu and was the beginning of what has become a trend leading to now 19 deaths in 13 days of January.

Two days later, on the 5th January 2020 of a Sunday early morning, al-Shabaab attacked the Manda Airstrip next to a military base in Lamu County and killed three people while severely injuring several others.

Four children were killed in Garissa County after al-Shabaab attacked a communication mast and in the exchange of gunfire killed four children and seriously injured 3 others on the same night of 7th January 2020.

Two days later again, on the 7th of January 2020, six people were confirmed dead in the Eastern part of Garissa County, Saretho village, after al-Shabaab attacked in the wee hours of the morning.

The al-Shabaab are reported to have been targeting a communication mast in the area and police officers stationed at a roadblock.

Al-Shabaab attacks in 13 days have claimed 19lives which only leads to the possibility of more of the attackers being in the country as Kenya’s Defense Forces are in their Country pegging the question are there loopholes that cannot be closed to avoid the killings?
