A 14-year-old pupil, Rehema Kura, has committed suicide in Mombasa County after the school she attended forced her to repeat a class.

Rehema Kura has reportedly been skipping classes since schools reopened in this year 2020 which prompted the school management to push her to repeat a class.

Rehema Kura’s body was found dangling in her parent’s house roof by her sister after she had gone missing in the morning hours of 8th January 2020.

Rehema Kura was a pupil at Amani primary school in Jomvu Mombasa County and is reported to have refused to go to school arguing that she did not want to repeat classes standard six.

Rehema Kura’s mother, Sada Nganda, revealed that she had last spoken to her daughter on the morning of Wednesday the 8th of January 2020.

Rehema’s mother also revealed that her daughter had said she was not feeling well on a Wednesday morning.

“She told me she was not feeling well and I asked to stay at home and rest,” Sada, Rehema’s mother said.

Rehema’s sister revealed that she did not want to repeat Standard Six but the school management would not hear any of it.

“She had complained to me many times since she received her end of year marks, which were low. Our mother promised her that she would be transferred to another school later on,” Rehema’s sister said.

Jason Odhiambo, Jomvu Sub-County Deputy Police Commander, noted that police were investigating reports that the school’s officials are actually forcing pupils to repeat classes.

Ali Abdallah, the school’s headmaster has declined to respond to the claims saying that he was too busy.

The Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has on numerous occasions warned schools against forcing students to repeat classes saying that some of those that performed poorly in KCPE posted great results in KCSE.
