“I Did Not Shoot DJ Evolve,” Babu Owino Tells Court

“Not Guilty,” you could have heard a pin drop as the Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino pleaded not guilty to charges of shooting Felix Orinda alias DJ Evolve at B Club located along Galana Road on 17th January 2020 in Nairobi.

Babu Owino was charged with having attempted to murder DJ Evolve after he was alleged to have pulled the trigger point-blank on the neck of the DJ.

Babu Owino’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta challenged the prosecution’s plea to detain his client arguing that he would not interfere with the witnesses as the prosecution had argued.

Cliff Ombeta said that the prosecution had no proof to warrant the detention of Babu Owino asking, “Interfering with a witness is a criminal offense. The question is when did he do it and where?”

“He who alleges must prove before the court.  The accused person doesn’t have a case in Kibera court,” Cliff Ombeta argued disputing the prosecution’s argument to have Babu Owino denied bail.

Cliff Ombeta argued that since Babu Owino had denied the charge, it was only prudent for the article 50 of the Constitution to apply.

Article 50 of the constitution accords every suspect the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

Cliff Ombeta said the provision of releasing Babu Owino on bail would grant him the right to prepare for the case.

A gun and bullets believed to have been used by the Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino were recovered by detectives on the afternoon of 17th January 2020, a few hours after the shooting of DJ Evolve.

The detectives recovered nine bullets and a spent cartridge believed to have been used on DJ Evolve and placed them as an exhibit which awaits analysis by the necessary experts.

Police collected Babu Owino’s DNA and did a search on the MP’s home where they recovered more bullets on the 18th of January 2020 as supporters who seem to float on brown envelopes continue threatening to storm police stations.
