Catholic University (CUEA) Announces Online Programs amid Coronavirus Fears

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is the first Kenyan learning institution to announce that it will initiate Online teaching programs to prevent the spread of coronavirus (Covid19) in case the virus comes knocking.

In a notice, CUEA instructed all its lecturers to submit their online teaching materials before March 20, 2020, as preparations are underway to begin the online lessons amid Coronavirus tension in the world.

CUEA Vice-Chancellor Stephen Mbugua Ngari ordered the lecturers to submit the copies in soft copies for them to be uploaded in the online platforms before the said deadline to enable early kick-off of the program.

Students of the University will then access the modules through the university portal and avoid attending classes physically thus preventing the spread of the deadly virus if it is confirmed in Kenya.

“I hereby direct all teaching staff to develop online teaching modules for all the units they are teaching this semester so that they can be uploaded to the university academic online platform,” Prof Ngari said.

“The modules are to be submitted in soft copy to the In-Charge, Blended Programs section of the university,” Prof Ngari added.

The CUEA now joins other institutions in other countries that have employed tactics to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The United Arab Emirates had instructed that all schools in the country go for an early spring break to avoid further spread of the coronavirus. Students and the pupils will later learn through an online program where they will be taught remotely.

Businesses in different parts of the world have advised employees to work remotely as the virus continues to affect the world economy.

Countries like Italy are really feeling the heat of the virus as towns and cities are quarantined to prevent the infection from spreading. Sporting events in the country are being played without fans.

The coronavirus death toll has reached 3,800 while 110,000 people have been infected.

Kenya has not yet confirmed a single case of the coronavirus with the ministry of health saying it is on a high alert. The Ministry banned exports of the respiratory masks which are currently in high demand.
