As the deadly Coronavirus continues to sweep across the world, efforts are underway through various players trying to control the pandemic.

Tech giants Apple and Google have partnered to add technology on their phones that will be able to alert users if they come in contact with the person infected with Covid-19.

The first phase of the rollout will target at least 3 billion users around the world in what experts are saying will help health experts track active cases.

According to Apple and Google, the new technology is known as “contact-tracing” is capable of tracing over a third of the world’s population. Users will have to opt in to the system for it to work.

The two companies say in May, they will add the ability in both iOS and Android for public health ministries to anonymously exchange information via apps on possible active Covid-19 cases.

If a patient who is in the system tests positive, and the information is fed into the system, all the people he or she was in contact with will be notified and asked to quarantine.

Health practitioners say the technology will help many countries around the world to battle the pandemic that is killing people en masse.

Globally, the total number of infections is at 1,699,828 with the numbers rising daily. The number of confirmed deaths stands at 102,742 while the number of recoveries stands at 376,508.

The total number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Africa has moved past the 10,000-mark. South Africa is leading with 2,003 confirmed cases, 24 deaths but is also the only country in Africa that has carried out the largest number of tests.

Egypt has 1,794 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 135 deaths while Algeria has 1,761 confirmed cases with 256 deaths. The spread in Africa is still slower than other continents. Kenya still has less than 200 confirmed cases.
