Here is the Number To Call If Your Landlord Evicts You For Not Paying Rent

It is a day for Kenyans living in rental houses to smile since they will no longer pay rent for the next three months.

It is also a time of sorrow for all landlords who were solely dependent on money from tenants as their main source of income but they will have to bear with the situation.

As Landlords and Tenants Association of Kenya (LAKTAK) announced a waiver of rents for the three months, some tenants are likely to get evicted or harassed during this time.

On the other hand, as a landlord, you are worried about how you will survive during this difficult time and thus you have so many questions crossing your mind right now.

Well, before things go out of hand, LAKTAK has issued a helpline number that you will contact if you have any complaints or if you require further clarification.

If you are having any inquiries whether you are a landlord or a tenant, SMS the word ‘Tenant’ or ‘Landlord’ to 20777 and get help.

To assist landlords during this time, the Association requested the government to give all Landlords servicing loans at commercial banks, a six-month moratorium.

The association said the move will allow Kenyans especially those with low income to focus on other things like putting food on the table as well as encouraging them to stay at home to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

“LATAK directs all tenants not to pay rent until when Uhuru Kenyatta orders businesses to resume normal operations. For Kenyans to stay in their houses because this is a collective responsibility for everybody, we all have to play our part, if we play our part correctly we can defeat this thing within three months and we will go back to normalcy,” LAKTAK announced on Wednesday, April,15,2020.

“All the landlords must forthwith stop evictions, harassment and disconnection of electricity and water to tenants.”
