Nairobi Women’s Hospital has every reason to smile after the Association Kenya Insurers reinstated insurance services that had been suspended following complaints from Kenyans.

Insurance companies had moved out of Nairobi Women’s Hospital en masse after a conversation went around social media platforms alleging that the hospital was inflating bills to milk cash from insurance companies.

“Medical Insurers have with effect from the date of this statement reinstated the services of Nairobi Women’s Hospital which has been suspended on February 5, 2020,” said part of the statement from the insurers.

The services had been suspended on February 5, 2020, meaning patients who had insurance covers could not be attended to due to the suspension.

“Consequently, going forward, insured customers medical bills will be paid by the insurers,” said the statement.

According to the insurers, the services that have been reinstated and will be covered by the companies include out-patient, in-patient, laboratories and pharmaceutical services as outlined in the specific policies.

Here is a full statement from the insurers:

According to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Inpatient and outpatient services will however be in line with the Ministry of Health Coronavirus (COVID-19) recent guidelines that include:

All elective non-emergency procedures will be rescheduled.

Emergency procedures will continue in line with NWH safety guidelines.

All routine Consultant, Physiotherapy, Ophthalmology and Dental clinics are suspended for the
next 30 days.

All patients booked for consultant reviews will be rescheduled to 1st May 2020.

Any urgent and necessary consultant reviews will be managed on a case-by-case basis through the hospital managers.

All patients requiring essential drug refills shall be attended to at NWH casualties according to the Hospital’s patient safety guidelines.

NWH further notes that Dr. Felix Wanjala stepped aside as the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer on the 8th February, 2020 and was subsequently disengaged from the Company by mutual agreement with the Board of Directors. Since 9th February 2020 the Interim Operating Committee, consisting of seasoned professionals, has been managing the Hospital.
