We said here that it is time to tame Tanzania before she tames the East African region with Covid-19 but EAC leaders seem to be too naive to take any tangible action.

Sources in Tanzania now indicate that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 is at 16,467 with the number of confirmed deaths standing at 1,293 and 118 recoveries.

The source within the ministry of health in Tanzania says they have been instructed to keep quiet about the spiking cases with those who dare raise a voice about it being threatened with jail terms and dismissal.

If the numbers are something to go by, then Tanzania is beyond being a time bomb in terms of Covid-19 cases and the neighbors should take action to protect their citizens or risk mass funeral more than those witnessed in Italy.

President John Pombe Magufuli has continuously dismissed the virus, saying it is the work of the devil, maintaining that prayers will defeat the pandemic.

Tanzanians have continued with their day-to-day activities, as usual, going to churches and mosques with total disregard of safety measures against Covid-19.

Opposition Members of Parliament in Tanzania boycotted sittings in the national assembly saying the government was covering up on Covid-19 cases. The MPs said some of their colleagues had died from Covid-19.

John Pombe Magufuli has also dismissed testing kits from China saying that they were fake and designed to give faulty results to create a false alarm among the people. Magufuli says he took samples of fruits such as pawpaw and mangoes to the lab to be tested against Covid-19 and that they tested positive.

As other neighbors as Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda impose a raft of measures including curfews and lockdowns, Magufuli has told Tanzanians to move freely and carry out their businesses as usual.

A time to take Tanzania is now.
