The war on COVID 19 has moved from panic mode to adapting lifestyle as Kenyans go back to work to balance between life and livelihood. While sanitation is key to the fight against the virus, most public spaces run out of soap or water at their entrances.

The mere appearance of an empty water container and lack of soap in the dispenser is just but a public relation exercise. While Kenyans before COVID-19 were used the idea of washing hands before meals, now they have to adjust frequent sanitation.

Just like in any war, having the weapons and intelligence is not enough if not well applied against the enemy. Most of us have merely been shuffling the germs in our hands and not getting rid of them as required. We have been washing hands and disinfecting them for a very short time Soap and water.

It turns out you need to 10 seconds less on washing hands with water than using sanitizers. For hand washing, one needs to rub hands together for 20seconds to kill germs and chemicals. The use of running warm water is highly recommended as you wash away with every rub and rinsing of hands.

The more foam the better, as one should rub palms, back of the hands, between fingers and under the nails during sanitation.

Hand sanitizer
While the use of soap and running water is highly recommended during sanitation, this may not be practical in all circumstances such as in public transport, lift, and stairs. In such scenarios, the use of alcohol-based sanitizer with an alcohol content of at least 70 percent.

Hand sanitizers are not for infants and children under 2 years while older children should only use it under adult supervision.

Hand sanitation should be rubbed until it is completely dry by the continuous rubbing of palms, between fingers, and at the back of the hand. One should avoid touching the mouth, nose, or eyes after applying hand sanitizer.
