Ghana President Goes Into Isolation, Deputy Trade Minister Resigns

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo has gone into self-isolation for two weeks as a precautionary measure by medical experts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Ghanaian government, one of the president’s contacts tested positive of the virus and despite President Nana Akifo-Addo testing Negative of the virus, he has still been sent into isolation.

“The president has elected to do so after at least one person within his close circle tested positive for COVID-19,” the minister said.

President Nana Akufo-Addo’s quarantine began on Saturday and he will be working from the presidential villa in Accra, capital of the West African country, as stated by Ghana’s information minister

On Friday, Ghana’s deputy trade and industry minister Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah Resigned after confessing that he had violated the COVID-19 measures by visiting a public place before the end of his self-isolation period.

That very Friday, President Nana Akufo-Addo released a statement that the minister resigned for violating coronavirus self-isolation measures after testing positive for the virus.

“This follows the admission by the deputy minister of his breach of the COVID-19 protocols, when, as a person certified to be positive of the virus, he visited a registration center in his constituency before the period of self-isolation was complete,” the statement said.

Ghana’s presidency said in a report, “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Friday, 3rd July 2020, accepted the resignation from the office of the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, MP, which takes immediate effect”.

Ghana has reported more than 19,300 cases of the new respiratory disease and 117 deaths one of the highest in the region.

Ghana has also gone ahead and lifted its strict lockdown although social-distancing measures remain in place as a measure of combating covid-19.
