The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Professor Kiama Gitahi says the expected reopening of institutions by Education CS Prof. George Magoha in September will not be applying for the University of Nairobi.
Professor Kiama Gitahi ruled out any form of on-campus learning this year saying the Senate has reached the decision to help fight the spread of coronavirus.
“University of Nairobi is at the epicenter of COVID-19. We are responsible for people to observe how the situation is unfolding and only allow learning when we are advised by experts to do so,” said Prof. Kiama.
According to the University of Nairobi, the admission of First-Year students will be done online and the students joining the university for the very first time will not be required to report to the university physically.
Additionally, those admitted to respective courses will register and begin their classes online as they await the COVID-19 curve to flatten.
The University expects this year’s graduation to also be conducted online.
According to Professor Kiama, By Saturday the University had 21 cases of positive staff and they are increasing as more are being lost.
Professor Kiama added that the University of Nairobi has over 65,000 students who live in all parts of Nairobi and therefore putting sanitizer in the hostels will not be of any help until they are advised by experts.
Despite Colleges and universities in the country is directed to improve their facilities and reopen in September, Professor Kiama states that he doesn’t think that the University of Nairobi will reopen anytime soon.
Ministry Of Education On Reopening Of Schools
The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates will sit their national exams in 2021 and the idea to resume classes in September 2020 for candidates has been shelved.
Education CS George Magoha said that there would be no national exams this year, noting that TVETs would be allowed to reopen in September if they meet the required measures by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of COVID-19.
All the other pupils and students other than the candidates will remain in the same class until 2021 to give the government sufficient time to flatten the COVID-19 curve.
