SportPesa Is Back, Mid-Week Jackpot Placed At Ksh 10 Million

After days, months, and almost years of fighting within and without the courts, gaming giant SportPesa is in Kenya with the jackpot kicking off at 10,000,000 shillings.

The company has rubbished information appearing on one of the dailies about its operations terming them innuendos and baseless claims aimed at smearing the company’s business and mode of operation.

In September 2019, SportPesa halted its operation in Kenya after months of being at loggerheads with the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) and the Ministry of Interior after their operational permits were canceled.

“SportPesa is disappointed with the decision by the Kenyan legislature to impose a 20 percent excise tax on all betting stakes,” said SportPesa in a statement on their website then.

Announcing its return, SportPesa said it had set its mid-week jackpot at 10,000,000 shillings, calling on Kenyans to place their bets for a chance to win saying it is committed to ensuring responsible gaming that adheres to the set rules and regulations.

“I was a diehard follower and gamer with SportPesa. Truth is, unlike others, they were open and a bit transparent. Every time you placed a bet, they could send you a message of your bets, giving you time and opportunity to follow your bets,” said Dan.

Before exiting the Kenyan market, SportPesa had invested heavily in the sporting sector in Kenya and was the sole sponsor of both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. At some point, the teams resorted to holding fundraisers to meet their financial needs.

The company is yet to indicate whether it will resume the sponsorship of local teams as well as local talents as it was before the storm.
