Twitter said they chose Ghana because it is a champion for democracy and a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet.

After years of Africans blasting and requesting Twitter to consider having an office in Africa, a continent that has the majority of its customers, Twitter has finally yielded in and set an office in Ghana.

Twitter said they chose Ghana because it is a champion for democracy and a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet.

“Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa,” the statement reads.

“This is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana,” Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted on Monday, saying its presence was crucial for the development of Ghana’s tech sector.

In November last year, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey visited Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa spent a lot of time with entrepreneurs, including Ethiopia’s ‘Tech Queen’ Betelhem Dessie, Project Manager at iCog, Noel Daniel, who is a cofounder at Africa Tech Next (a global series of panel events on African tech entrepreneurship and market opportunities in the continent’s unfolding digital revolution).

He is also a co-founder at Jack will also meet iCog’s chief executive Get net a Seffa. ICog is a tech firm dedicated to advancing the frontier of artificial intelligence research and applications and delivering quality products to customers, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In October 2020, the Twitter CEO showed solidarity in the protests against police brutality that rocked Nigeria and supported bitcoin usage throughout the demonstrations. For months, it seemed Dorsey was solely concerned about bitcoin activities on the continent. However, today’s news puts things into perspective and shows connecting Twitter and the continent was at the back of his mind after all.
