Uhuru Appoints 7 To Nominate IEBC Commissioners

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed a panel of seven for the selection of nominees for the appointment of members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The 7-member team will oversee the filling of the four vacant positions at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Those appointed are:

1. Dr. Elizabeth Muli
2. Gideon Solonka
3. Elizabeth Meyo
4. Dorothy Kimengech
5. Rev. Joseph Ngumbi
6. Dr. Faradim Abdalla

The selection panel will invite applications within 7 days from qualified persons and publish the names of all applicants and their qualifications in the Gazette, two newspapers with national circulation, and on the Parliamentary Service Commission website.

The race to make sure that IEBC is in shape comes at a time the country is preparing for a possible referendum to decide on the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). The referendum was set to take place in June but it might be moved to September.

The BBI has already been discussed by all the counties across the country. There are concerns that at least 35 counties were given fake BBI documents which they “discussed” and passed without even knowing what was contained.

Every election year, IEBC is always at the center of every conflict, accused of being used by the government of the day to rig the elections through what has been described as “Deep State.” The 2022 elections will be the most contentious and IEBC has work to do.
