KEY POINTS

Diversity in the corporate world is a true developmental issue that needs to be addressed and embraced in Kenya.

The percentage of women sitting in boardrooms in Kenya has hit 36 percent against the global average of 21 percent, new report reveals.

Compiled by the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), New Faces New Voices (NFNV), and Kenya private Sector Alliance, the report examined the impact of diversity and inclusion on organizational performance, decision making, and productivity in the boardroom.

The new figure is a significant improvement toward the recognition of  the importance of diversity and inclusion in a company’s leadership and governance.

The insight aimed to gain an accurate understanding and drive towards embracing practices that promote equality by 2030, as stipulated in the Social Pillar of the Vision 2030 Blueprint.

Another survey done by the Board Diversity and Inclusion in 2021 also shows that 21 percent of women are appointed board chairpersons in Kenya as compared to the global average of 3 percent.

“As champions of best practice in governance and management, KIM has made substantial progress over the years; and now we are intensifying our efforts to create a more inclusive, diverse, and supportive community.” Said Dr. Muriithi Ndegwa, CEO, KIM, during the launch of the Board Diversity and Inclusion Study Report on Oct 14, 2021.

Geoffrey Odundo, the NSE, Chief Executive, says that diversity in the corporate world is a true developmental issue that needs to be addressed and embraced in Kenya.

“Tackling gender equality will unlock billions of shillings which is currently unrealized economic value in Kenya,” Odundo added.
