KEY POINTS

At the dawn of 2022, we can’t remain rooted in the past. We must hit the accelerator to build an equal and inclusive future. Our economic growth, workforce participation, and future generations depend on it, and it all begins with supporting such causes as women in leadership.

Gender equality and getting more women into leadership roles are trending topics across the globe. Paving the way for women in the political, business, and civic arena is more than just a way of achieving equitable and peaceful societies but of creating a friendly environment for investments as well.

Well, this notion is manifesting itself in many ways in Kenya. More and more women are joining leadership, in investments and other corporate opportunities. Others in the corporate sector are venturing into politics – case in point, Keroche Breweries CEO, Tabitha Karanja.

Ms. Karanja has announced her intentions to run for the senatorial seat in Nakuru County. On November 26, she met with stakeholders from the region to discuss the way forward.

“I believe politics defines every aspect of our lives and that is why we must be engaged in it fully as a people of Nakuru or else, those who do not value Nakuru and our values will control us,” she said convincingly.

She added that leadership is about listening to the people and being able to inspire them to be better than they are.

Sweet are the words, but we can’t take them at face value. Nonetheless, these words come from a woman who’s been an inspiration to many.

Tabitha Karanja has trodden the business world with a clear mind, a phenomenal force, and a mind of innovation. From leading one of the most successful companies in Kenya to helping farmers get a ready market for their farm produces, Ms. Karanja is nothing but a woman many look up to.

Her decision to run for Nakuru County senator springs from several reasons. Among them are eliminating the structural and legal obstacles that hinder all girls’ and women’s participation in politics and decision-making, and holding those obstructing them accountable.

Her drive is to create equal opportunities for all and make Nakuru County the most business-friendly region in Kenya. She is also focused on bringing more investments to the county.

For a long time in Africa. the political terrain has been considered too rough to navigate. Few make the journey, perceiving that their male colleagues would try to undermine them. However, Tabitha Karanja has chosen to defy the odds and seek to show that women in Africa can make some positive impacts, not only in politics but also in the business sector.

“With your blessings, I want us to walk together and transform Nakuru into the best region in the country where all Kenyans would want to come and live and invest in,” Ms. Karanja said.

Her running for office is a commitment to elevating the voices of the women out there as well as the women-focused organizations in Kenya that are striving to leverage their expertise for change.

Well, it goes without saying that creating an inclusive environment where everyone and every business can bring their whole self to realize growth is all everyone wants.

At the dawn of 2022, we can’t remain rooted in the past. We must hit the accelerator to build an equal and inclusive future. Our economic growth, workforce participation, and future generations depend on it, and it all begins with supporting such causes as women in leadership.
