Corporal punishment comes with anger and that’s where the problem starts. Instead of being fair, you end up hurting the kids who react differently

The Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) has opposed the moves to reintroduce the caning system in schools to curb the continuous student unrest in the country.

According to Chairperson Mutheu Kasanga, parents and all other stakeholders should make learners understand the art of respecting and protecting public property.

She further noted that the gaps still existing in the management systems of various schools should be addressed as fast as possible arguing that there’s no link between strikes and corporal punishment.

Kasanga has urged those advocating for cane in schools to rethink and come up with other corrective measures instead.

“Corporal punishment comes with anger and that’s where the problem starts. Instead of being fair, you end up hurting the kids who react differently. let parents start by correcting their kids at home, teachers can do little in terms of discipline”. She stated.

The chairperson went ahead to note that schools should adopt mechanisms through which students’ issues can be sorted out peacefully. They should never go physical because this is what causes anger and animosity.

She, however, said that those students who are involved in the school unrest must face the wrath of the law.

The culprits should face the full wrath of the law. they should not be readmitted in any school whether public or private because they might influence others”, she added.

On the school insurance issue, she proved support to the education Secretary prof George Magoha in his call for school property to be insured. This she said will relieve parents of the burden of paying for the damages in case of eventualities.
