A Quick Breath for Broke Kenyans As 800g Bar Soap Drops To 199 Shillings

800g of Jamaa Cream Bar Soap is now retailing at 199 shillings at Naivas supermarket, down from about 230 shillings two weeks ago.
This comes after Kenyans launched a series of complaints on social media about how the commodity prices have been rapidly rising.
Meanwhile, a liter of Fresh Fri cooking oil brand is cheapest at carrefour shopping outlet at 397 shillings while highest at Naivas and Clean shelf supermarket at 436 shillings.
Five liters of the same brand are selling at 2,014 shilling at Naivas and Clean shelf while trading supermarkets.
Prices of detergent have increased by 19 percent according to KNBS, with 500 grams of product averaging 198.06 shillings up from 165.59 shillings.
For instance, a 500g of Toss Detergent powder is retailing at 185 shillings while the 1kg container is 335 shillings at Naivas supermarket.
The increased cost of Palm oil, which is used to manufacture detergents and cosmetics, explains why you have been paying more for bar soap and laundry soap over the last few months.
The situation is, however, expected to change at the end of the month after a correction in the prices of crude and palm oil in the global market according to local manufacturers.
Other basic commodities such as maize flour, wheat flour, and sugar are still also on an upward trend.
A 2kg Soko Maize flour is 210 shillings, while the same quantity of Ajaib Home Baking flour is 212 shillings at Naivas supermarket. On the other hand, 2kg of sugar now costs 235 shillings.
A 500Ml packet of milk has shot to an average of between 55 – 70 shillings across the retail shops while a 400g of Bread averages 65 shillings.
A carton of Brookside Dairy Milk – 12 Packets Each 500ml, cost an average of 620 shillings at Naivas.
Prices of rice, tissue paper, and salt have also increased with tissue papers retailing at 40 shillings per roll while 1Kg of kensalt is 33 shillings.
A 90 Kg bag of maize has been retailing at an average of 4000 in counties such as Nairobi and Kisumu, and up to the highest of 4300 shillings in other counties such as Kakamega.
