Nairobi To Experience Dry Taps On Thursday As Rise In Water Bill Looms

The Nairobi city and sewerage company has announced that there will be water interruptions in Nairobi on Thursday from 6. am to midnight. The supply hitches are set to pave way for scheduled maintenance at the Ngethu Water Treatment plant and the Ngethu Gigiri transmission mains in a new move by the company to improve its services.

It will also facilitate the interconnection of the new Kiambu Embakasi pipeline by the contractor. During the shutdown, the whole of the City Centre, the University of Nairobi main campus, Coca-Cola Factory, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, EPZ Athi River, Mlolongo area, Gatundu, and Kiambu towns.

Others include areas along Juja road, Mombasa Road, Jogoo road, outering road, Kangundo road, Thika road, Limuru road, Naivasha and Kikuyu Road.

The Nairobi Water and sewerage company also noted that Waiyaki Way, Riverside, Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, and areas along Lang’ata road will also be affected.

This comes at a time when the country’s capital residents are waiting to pay more for water if a proposal by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) seeking to review the tariff upward is approved. The company named the price increase a step ahead of the company’s measures towards meeting its obligations.

“Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company propose to increase its tariff to recover cost and improve its service delivery,” the company said in a gazette notice dated Friday, July 8.

If the proposal is approved, domestic water users will have to pay 80 shillings per cubic meter from the earlier 70 shillings per cubic meter. NCWSC has also expanded the tariff band from the current maximum of 60 cubic meters and above to 300 cubic meters.

The bulk water supply tariff will increase to 32 shillings from the current 30 shillings while water kiosks will be charged 22 shillings from the current 20 shillings all per cubic meter.
