KEY POINTS

TSC advertised 14,460, the highest number in recent times as it grapples with fixing the acute shortage of tutors in public primary and secondary schools.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

TSC declared 5,000 teaching vacancies to support the government policy on 100 percent transition of learners from primary to secondary schools and to address the existing teacher shortage.

Big blow to unemployed teachers who did not secure internship contracts in the latest changes on the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, scoresheet. These teachers will not be considered when inviting applicants if the latest Scoresheet is anything to go by.

TSC stated that only the top five applicants will be invited by schools in every slot advised. A case study from previous employment clearly shows that no teacher without these marks will come any close to the top five.  This move has completely isolated this group of teachers without internship marks.

Several changes have been made to this year’s mark scheme. Maximum internship marks have been slashed from 30 to 15 marks. This will only serve those who have worked for 3 years. Those who have been an intern for 2 years and 1 year will score 10 and 5 marks respectively.

Recently, TSC advertised 14,460, the highest number in recent times as it grapples with fixing the acute shortage of tutors in public primary and secondary schools.

TSC declared 5,000 teaching vacancies to support the government policy on 100 percent transition of learners from primary to secondary schools and to address the existing teacher shortage.

TSC also advertised 8,230 vacancies to replace teachers exiting service through natural attrition. Of the advertised vacancies 6,539 posts for primary schools and 1,691 posts for secondary schools.

According to TSC, 3,972 of the recruited teachers will be posted to different secondary schools to assist in the 100 percent transition policy which was initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta. 1,000 teachers will be posted to primary institutions while teacher training colleges will get 28 tutors.

The majority of these educators will work in primary schools to fill the gap left by teachers who were transferred to secondary institutions. TSC also lined up 844 permanent positions for schools in the north. Through affirmative action, the jobs are earmarked for teachers from the region.

All applicants must have studied the two teaching subjects at KCSE except for Agriculture, Business Studies, Home Science, and Computer Studies.

For those who did not study Business Studies and Computer Studies, one should have attained a minimum of C+ (Plus) in Mathematics at KCSE. For those who did not study Agriculture and Home Science, one should have attained a minimum of C+ in Biology at KCSE.

Graduate Teachers should have studied a minimum of eight (8) course units in each teaching subject. In addition, the teachers must have studied Special Methods in their two teaching subjects of choice together with a minimum of three (3) months of teaching practice.

Applicants previously employed under contract and whose services were terminated due to inadequate units in teaching subjects and who have since obtained enhancement certificates with adequate units are eligible to apply.
