Even though most farmers across regions such as Western, South Rift and Nyanza have harvested produce, the cost of maize is still above the roof for most consumers.
Before the harvests, maize costs between 5,800 to 6000 shillings per 90kg bag. With just a slight reduction, maize prices have now declined from 6,000 to Sh5,600 shillings in Eldoret. The price of the product has reduced from 5,900 to 5,400 shillings in Kisumu and 5,600 down from 5,900 shillings in Nakuru.
Kenyans have attributed the current situation to the high taxes that they pay, high cost of energy, fuel as well as high cost of production, and inputs leading to higher cost of output.
Even as politics continue to take center stage in the country, Kenyans are hopeful that whoever will take the top seat will reduce the cost of basic commodities and thus ease the cost of living.
