Life is unpredictable. Short and no one knows what will happen the next minute. But someone said this; nobody will ever come out of this life alive. So, what should we do? Live our lives. Be happy. Maximize every opportunity you get and thank the Almighty.

One of the greatest moments in someone’s life is when they are no longer able to work and their time no longer equals money. Many call this time; retirement. Retirement comes to every one of us. Nobody runs away from retirement.

Retirement often comes in two ways for most people, not just in Kenya but all over the world; a time to rest and happiness for some, and a time of pain and inadequate revenue for some. The worst is to retire with nothing to fall back to.

Lee Njiru, a good friend of President Daniel Moi said, “There are only two greatest friends when you will no longer be working; your God and your Money.” According to Njiru, friends will leave, and even some family members will leave when you retire, but your MONEY and GOD.

Stats released in July showed that Kenyan retirees are among the poorest with about 80 percent of them opting to look for other jobs to support their families. This should not and never be the case. The situation has to change now.

The only way to change this is through savings. Kenya has the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) that enables people to save towards their retirement so that when that time comes that they will no longer be at work, they have something to sustain them.

What is more, NSSF enables one to save as little as 25 shillings through the Haba Haba program.
