Kenyans Warned To Watch Out For Long Rains Starting This February

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans on long rain season that normally runs from March to May will begin in February in some parts of the country.

On Wednesday, 29th January, Kenya Met Director General Dr David Gikungu said that the season in most parts would run between February and June.

The Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley are expected to experience above-average rainfall starting in February with the peak expected in April and May for most areas.

“The MAM 2025 forecast indicates that near to above-average rainfall is expected over the Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, most of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the southern parts of the Southeastern lowlands and the extreme northern parts of northwestern Kenya,” Met stated.

He also added that the rains were expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands.

According to Gikungu, the five regions would experience occasional rains during the first half of the forecast period. However, regions of the Southwestern and South Rift Valley were likely to experience rainfall throughout the forecast period

Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, and Kakamega counties to receive heavy downpour for the next five days.

The  Highland East counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi would receive heavy rains in the first two days of the forecast period.

Highland East Counties to experience subside in the last three days with sunny conditions expected on Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2.

Southeastern Counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties as well as inland parts of Tana River County will receive rains but in moderate amounts.

Parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya are likely to remain generally sunny and dry though a few areas could experience occasional rainfall at the beginning of the forecast period.
