Safaricom Retains Lead As Choice For Kenyans Seeking Home Internet

Safaricom has tightened its grip as Kenya’s top fixed internet provider, posting steady gains in both connections and market share in the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

According to the latest sector statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Safaricom recorded 678,118 fixed internet subscriptions as of March 2025—up from 621,149 the previous quarter.

This performance pushed Safaricom’s market share up to 36.5 percent from 36.1 percent, reaffirming its dominance in a space that is seeing increasing competition. The telco’s continued growth underscores the sustained demand for its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) solutions, particularly in urban households seeking reliable high-speed connectivity.

Rival Jamii Telecommunications, known for its FAIBA brand, maintained second place with 418,309 connections, a modest rise from 405,646 the previous quarter. However, its market share slipped to 22.5 percent from 23.6 percent, as other players accelerated their expansion efforts.

Zuku, operated by Wananchi Group, held onto third place with 267,812 subscribers, translating to a 14.4 percent market share, slightly down from 15.4 percent.

Poa Internet continued its upward trajectory, growing its user base from 238,030 to 261,491. This lifted its market share to 14.1 percent, up from 13.8 percent.

Smaller players also made notable gains. Vilcom Network nearly doubled its subscriptions to 71,693, increasing its share to 3.9 percent from 3.2 percent following the launch of a new product. Mawingu Networks expanded its reach in semi-urban areas, growing its subscriptions from 48,555 to 59,002.

“The market for fixed internet is experiencing steady growth, largely driven by new fibre rollouts and increased demand for home connectivity,” the CA noted.

In total, fixed data subscriptions across Kenya grew by 8.1 percent in the quarter to reach 1.86 million. Fibre-to-the-home remains the dominant access technology, cementing its status as the preferred choice for households seeking fast, stable internet.
