The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has held the second edition of its API Masterclass, reinforcing its commitment to partnering with Kenya’s tech developer community to co-create simplified digital solutions. The initiative is part of KRA’s wider digital transformation agenda.

KRA is the first public sector institution in Kenya to develop a platform that allows businesses and other private sector players to seamlessly integrate with its systems. Its GavaConnect Enterprise API platform currently provides access to 16 APIs and has already registered more than 1,000 developers—signaling strong industry interest in tax-technology innovation.

Speaking at the event, KRA Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery and Client Engagement, Ms. Annastacia Githuba, described GavaConnect as a significant public sector milestone that advances Kenya’s tax digitization efforts.

“Today marks a great opportunity for us at KRA to open up to the wider tech community. As a representative of the government, KRA is setting the pace by making government services accessible in ways that allow developers to integrate them into innovative solutions. This is not just about tax collection—it’s about creating opportunities for developers to build, innovate, and even monetize around our products, helping us improve services from the ground up,” she said.

The platform’s API library includes services such as PIN and Tax Compliance Certificate verification, NIL return filing, and e-Slip checks—tools aimed at enhancing taxpayer experience, boosting compliance, and improving efficiency.

The Masterclass provided a collaborative, hands-on environment for developers. Participants received an overview of the API vision, took part in live demonstrations, and contributed feedback on their experiences, including suggestions for future features. The session was tailored to support both newcomers and seasoned developers building advanced tax-support solutions.

Looking ahead, KRA plans to expand GavaConnect to integrate key initiatives such as the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) and enhanced VAT compliance tools. These additions are expected to further streamline compliance and reporting for businesses.

The API Masterclass series is a tangible step toward achieving KRA’s goal of simplifying compliance, embracing new technologies, and cementing partnerships with Kenya’s tech community to co-design the future of tax administration.
