Kakea Mbacha: The Brand Mind, Tech Strategist, and Fintech Leader Rewriting the Diaspora Story

In many ways, Kakea Mbacha’s career mirrors the evolution of Kenya’s digital economy, beginning in the creative trenches of advertising, maturing through the rapid shifts of the tech sector, and ultimately finding purpose at the intersection of finance, innovation, and human connection. Today, as the Country Manager for LemFi East Africa, she stands as one of the region’s most compelling new voices in fintech leadership.
From Advertising Floors to Big-Picture Leadership
Kakea’s journey began in Kenya’s high-energy advertising world. At Creative Y&R and later at Brainwave Communications, she built her foundation in understanding people—why they buy, how they behave, what moves them, and why.
“It shaped how I think,” she says of those early years. “Communication, strategy, brand psychology, those were my building blocks.”
Her rise to Digital Client Service Lead at Creative VMLY&R marked a turning point. She wasn’t just executing campaigns; she was orchestrating integrated marketing strategies for some of East Africa’s biggest brands. The job demanded discipline, cross-functional leadership, and the ability to navigate an ecosystem that was transforming by the day.
“I learned how to bring teams together around a shared vision,” she reflects, an ability that would become invaluable in the fast-paced tech world that awaited her.
Discovering the Power of Technology
That next leap came with Wowzi, where Kakea managed partnerships for brands like Netflix, Diageo, Safaricom and Kapa, sitting squarely at the crossroads where creators, brands and technology converge.
“It expanded my understanding of digital ecosystems,” she recalls. “I saw how technology can transform markets and empower communities.”
But it was fintech that would open an even bigger door.
Entering Fintech—And Finding Purpose
Her transition into LemFi in 2023 was not planned; it was the result of a natural progression—strategy, consumer insight, technology, impact, all converging.
“In remittances, every transaction tells a story,” she says. “A parent supporting family. A student paying fees. A professional contributing back home. I wanted to help make those moments easier, faster, more meaningful.”
She began as LemFi’s Country Manager for Kenya. In a remarkably short period, her scope expanded: she now oversees operations across Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, managing customer and regulatory relationships across the UK, USA, Europe and Canada.
At the same time, she served as CEO of the Association of Fintechs in Kenya (AFIK), championing innovation and inclusive policy frameworks for the broader industry.
A Leadership Style Built on Data—and Lived Experience
What makes Kakea’s approach stand out is her insistence that fintech must remain human. She leads with a blend of analytics and empathy, business strategy and cultural insight.
“I understand the diaspora customer personally, not just professionally,” she says. “That gives me a perspective that balances empathy with strategic clarity.”
Her multidisciplinary background, marketing, consumer behaviour, tech, financial services, helps her connect dots others miss: culture, product, community, regulation. In rooms where decisions shape the industry, she brings context, nuance and a strong, steady voice for responsible innovation.
Challenges That Built Conviction
Stepping into senior leadership in a fast-moving, highly regulated industry was not without its tests. Managing cross-border operations, navigating complex regulatory structures, and balancing stakeholder expectations pushed her to refine her leadership style quickly.
“It taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers,” she says. “It’s about staying grounded, learning continuously, and making decisions even in uncertainty.”
Through it all, she discovered her own resilience and the power of leaning into her strengths: empathy, strategy, communication and cultural understanding.
Shaping the Future of Digital Finance
Looking ahead, Kakea is clear-eyed about the impact she wants to make.
She hopes to redefine how East Africans in the diaspora experience remittances—not just as transactions, but as bridges of care, identity and connection. She envisions financial systems that are faster, more accessible and deeply human-centred.
Beyond fintech, she is passionate about empowering African women in leadership and technology.
“Representation matters,” she says. “I hope my journey encourages others to take up space and lead boldly.”
Purpose as Her North Star
What keeps her going is simple: impact.
“Knowing that my work supports families and communities gives me the energy to keep pushing,” she says. “The African fintech story is still being written, and I’m motivated to help shape it.”
From advertising studios to the helm of one of Africa’s fastest-growing remittance companies, Kakea Mbacha embodies the blend of creativity, strategy and heart that defines the new generation of African tech leaders. Her journey is a reminder that purpose, when paired with bold leadership, can reshape industries and touch lives across continents.
