Principal Secretary for State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD), Charles Hinga today handed over key social amenities at the New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate marking a major milestone ahead of the upcoming handover of the 5,000 newly completed affordable housing units.

The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) continues to redefine what dignified living means for Kenyans going beyond providing homes to creating integrated, secure, and thriving communities. The New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate is one such community space where everything a homeowner may need will soon be under one roof.

Speaking at the handover of several social amenities including an ECDE and Daycare facility, PS Hinga, underscored that the programme is not only constructing housing units but also providing its residents a wholesome living experience.

“The facilities here including schools, healthcare facilities, retail spaces, and the police post are designed to make the estate a fully self-sufficient, thriving community and improve the quality of life for its residents,” he explained.

The facilities handed over by the PS include; a fully equipped ECDE and Daycare Centre, a strip mall providing spaces for local businesses such as cybercafes, eateries, coffee shops, and clothing stores, a new outpatient center/dispensary that provides easy access to healthcare to residents of this new community safeguarded under an in-house police post with a fire station to enhance safety and emergency response.

These amenities are designed to create a cohesive, self-sufficient community, empowering residents economically by enabling homeowners to live, work, and access essential services within the estate.

During the handover, the Interior Principal Secretary, Mr Raymond Omollo, hailed the programme for its move in strategically positioning a police post inside the estate, considering its magnitude of the project and to assure the safety of its residents. “We will ensure the police post here is adequately manned and in conjunction with the State Department for Housing. We are working to ensure we setup CCTV coverage across the estate as well as work with the local leaders to ensure the highest standards of security are achieved”

Meanwhile, enumeration for the newly available 5000 studio units that are soon to be handed over is currently underway, bringing thousands more residents into this fully serviced, thriving community.

The Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate is part of the government’s projects being implemented in 111 constituencies across the country that is aimed at providing decent, affordable housing to Kenyans from all walks of life.

With these new amenities, the AHP project is on track to become a benchmark for holistic urban development, where social cohesion, economic empowerment, and security coexist within a single neighbourhood.

Reiterating these remarks during the handover was the Deputy Governor Nairobi County, James Njoroge  “This initiative sets a new standard for urban living in Kenya: a neighbourhood where residents are not just tenants but active participants in a thriving, cohesive, and empowered community”.

The New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing estate is poised to become a model for sustainable urban development, demonstrating how integrated planning, social amenities, and economic opportunities can uplift lives and strengthen communities.
