Voting in the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) elections in Homa Bay County was dramatically halted on Sunday after confusion and chaos disrupted an exercise that was meant to give teachers a voice in shaping the future of education leadership in the region.

The election, which was organized to allow post-primary school teachers to choose leaders who would represent their professional interests and advocate for better learning conditions, began on a calm note early in the morning. Teachers turned up in large numbers, hopeful that the process would be peaceful and orderly. However, the atmosphere changed sharply around midday when allegations of serious irregularities emerged.

Some teachers claimed that a number of voters were allowed to cast their ballots more than once, while others were allegedly permitted to vote despite failing to meet the legal requirements. These claims quickly sparked anger and suspicion among those present, many of whom felt that the integrity of the process was being compromised.

As tensions escalated, the situation spiraled out of control. In the ensuing chaos, several ballot papers were destroyed, with some reportedly set on fire. Labour officers who were presiding over the election struggled to contain the disorder and were eventually forced to suspend the voting exercise to restore calm and prevent further damage.

Teachers at the polling centre said the problems were made worse by the unexpectedly high turnout. While the large number of participants showed teachers’ strong interest in union leadership and education matters, it also overwhelmed the election officials, making it difficult to manage the exercise effectively.

One of the chairmanship contenders, Ben Obop, openly criticized the labour officers, accusing them of failing to work fairly with all candidates. He argued that the lack of transparency and equal treatment fueled mistrust and heightened tensions among teachers during the voting process.

The KUPPET elections have attracted intense competition, with at least 37 candidates vying for various positions within the union. Many teachers believe the outcome of the election is crucial, as the leaders chosen will play a key role in championing teachers’ welfare, improving working conditions, and influencing education policy.
