Is It True That When You Take Off With A Luhya Child, They Will Always Come Back?

Sometimes marriages and relationships end, and people have to part ways. In this case, one has to leave with the children, and in most cases, the mother takes off with the kids as the only leverage to toy with the man financially, emotionally, and psychologically.

However, it is said that nobody runs away with a child belonging to a Luhya man. The child will always find a way home. Is this true or just a myth? Does it happen to all Luhyas or just a fraction? We sort to find out. If happens among the Bukusu community.

If you divorce a Bukusu man, and take off with the kids, and the man really wants his kids back, you are not lucky. The kids will come back whether you like it or not.

We asked an elder from Bungoma, Tongaren Constituency, Jackson Wambilianga, about it, and he gave us a small preview of what happens:

“When a Bukusu man wants his children back, it is easy,” he says. “The names of the kids are written, either on paper or a piece of wood. Pieces of clothing for each child are attached to each of the names. Some soil is picked from the ground where the kids played or the house they lived in. They are then placed in a small pot, and an aunt, grandma, or uncle is called to chant some relics while calling out the names of the kids.”

They will repeat the process every day, mostly at 5 am, calling the names of the child/children. When the name is called, the kids/kids will wake up at that time. If they can speak, they will demand to be taken to their father, or fall critically ill with all tests coming out negative. If they are too young to speak, they will scream, go into a frenzy, and refuse to eat for a week. The kids will torment you until you take them back to their father.

So, ladies and gentlemen, it is not a myth, not witchcraft, but it happens. You do not just run off with a child belonging to a loving Bukusu man. Khabusie!
