The Silent Divorce Drowning Millions Of Kenyan Homes

Marriage is a good thing. They said. It is ordained by God. They added. But is it? Are you happy in your marriage? Are you and your partner living your dream lives? Maybe and maybe not.

All marriages start as a life in Paradise, best of friends, laughter, and smiles. But with time, the majority of them end up tasteless, stressful, and dead.

Millions of Kenyans are now living through what I call a silent divorce. Partners living together physically, but emotionally, are divorced. Imagine this: you live in the same room, share a bed, share a meal, but live like total strangers.

Communication is long gone. You no longer communicate like you used to. Crazier still is your partner sending you a text while in the same room as you. They hate you to the point that they can’t see themselves opening their mouth to speak to you unless they are eating.

You never talk about your lives. Your communication is all about the kids, bills, and fights. You can never have a logical conversation. Every conversation leads to a fight. You are scared of starting a conversation because you have no idea how your partner will react.

You choose silence. Because it is the only way you have peace. You choose to always be away from your house to minimize the chances of a full-blown war. You find more peace in bars, at the office, far, far away from your house. You find more peace in your car, listening to your songs and having a drink, but not near your partner.

It is the silent divorce. The marriage is over, but neither of you wants to leave. You are living under the hope that things will change. You look at your kids and decide to hold on. But for how long? When does the silent divorce actually manifest?
