TSC To Start Posting 9,159 Teachers, List Of Documents Required For Verification

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it will begin posting a total of 9,159 newly recruited teachers to various schools across the country in April this year.

According to TSC, the recruitment drive is aimed at filling vacancies created by teachers who exited service through natural attrition, including retirement, death, resignation, or other forms of exit from the teaching service.

In preparation for the postings, TSC has already commenced the recruitment process by inviting shortlisted applicants for document verification through text messages. The messages have been sent to teachers who applied for the replacement positions that were advertised in November last year.

According to TSC, the interviews will primarily focus on the verification of documents rather than oral questioning. This follows the closure of the application portal on December 8, after which the Commission began shortlisting and inviting applicants for the next stage of the process.

Once the document verification exercise is completed at the sub-county level, TSC Sub-County Directors will compile and forward the details of successful candidates to TSC Headquarters in Nairobi. The Commission will then conduct further scrutiny before finalizing the list of teachers to be posted to schools.

In the November advert, TSC announced 7,065 vacancies for primary schools, 12 positions for junior secondary schools (JSS), and 2,082 posts for secondary schools, bringing the total to 9,159 positions. The Commission clarified that all these jobs are on permanent and pensionable terms, providing long-term employment security to successful candidates.

To qualify for recruitment, applicants must be registered teachers with the TSC. Those applying for primary school positions must hold a P1 certificate, while applicants for junior and secondary school positions must possess at least a Diploma in Education.

The recruitment exercise has been welcomed by many teachers, particularly P1 teachers who have waited for approximately three years without a major mass recruitment by TSC. It has also created an opportunity for junior school intern teachers to transition from internship to permanent and pensionable employment.

Under the TSC scoring system, teachers who have served as interns have been awarded 50 marks, giving them a significant advantage in the recruitment process. However, priority will be given to local teachers based on the scoring criteria, which considers candidates from the Sub-County first, followed by those from the County and then the wider Region.

Although the verification process is currently ongoing, TSC has indicated that the actual posting of teachers to their respective schools is likely to take place in March, with official reporting expected in April.

The Commission has also outlined the documents required for verification. For primary school teachers, these include:

  1. National identification card
  2. Certificate of Registration as a teacher
  3. Evidence of completion of Upgrade Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (UDPTE), where applicable
  4. PTE Certificate
  5. KCSE certificate or its equivalent, including certificates for resits where applicable
  6. KCPE certificate or its equivalent, including certificates for resits where applicable
  7. Letter of certification of results by KNEC, where applicable
  8. Primary and secondary school leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials
  9. National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) card, where applicable
  10. An affidavit sworn under the Oaths and Statutory Declarations Act, Cap 15 of the Laws of Kenya, to explain any variance in names

For post-primary teachers (JSS and secondary), the required documents include;

  1. National identification card
  2. Certificate of Registration as a teacher
  3. Diploma or Degree certificate and official transcripts
  4. KCSE certificate or its equivalent, including certificates for resits where applicable
  5. KCPE certificate or its equivalent, including certificates for resits where applicable
  6. Primary and secondary school leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials
  7. National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) card, where applicable
  8. An affidavit sworn under the Oaths and Statutory Declarations Act, Cap 15 of the Laws of Kenya, to explain any variance in names
  9. Letter of certification of results by KNEC, where applicable

However, serving intern teachers who have already been awarded 50 marks in the TSC scoresheet will only be required to present their national identification cards during the verification exercise.

TSC has further stated that persons with disabilities will be required to clearly indicate their disability status and specify the nature of their disability to facilitate appropriate placement.

After the verification exercise, the TSC Sub-County Director will compile a Merit List of all applicants whose documents have been successfully verified.
