Who Is IShowSpeed? The Internet Star Taking Kenya By Storm

American internet star IShowSpeed’s visit to Kenya has not only thrilled thousands of fans but has also revealed an interesting shift in how global digital celebrities are being received across different generations in the country.

The streamer, born Darren Jason Watkins Jr, is in Kenya as part of his 28-day African tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa.” From the moment he landed, it was clear that his popularity, especially among young people had reached another level. President William Ruto himself welcomed Speed through a video message, describing Kenya as “a pulse, a feeling, and a home,” setting the tone for a visit that has blended entertainment, culture, and national pride.

Speed’s livestreams in Kenya quickly became some of the most-watched of his entire African tour. He visited Upper Hill School, played rugby with students, toured Kenyatta Market, explored Nairobi National Park, and enjoyed a feast at Carnivore Restaurant. Everywhere he went, massive crowds followed, chanting his name and trying to get close to the energetic streamer. He later revealed that Kenya recorded the highest number of new subscribers in a single stream during his tour, putting the country at number one in Africa.

However, while Gen Z fans and younger audiences clearly know Speed inside out, following his every move, his visit has also sparked conversations among older Kenyans. Many millennials and older viewers admitted they were not familiar with him before his arrival. Some expressed confusion over the hype, while others acknowledged that although his style may not appeal to them personally, his influence on young people is undeniable.

This generational gap has played out both online and offline. On social media, debates have emerged about adult men joining the excitement, with some critics calling it excessive while others defended it as normal admiration for a global star. Still, many agree that Speed represents a new kind of celebrity one built through livestreaming, gaming, and real-time interaction rather than traditional media.

IShowSpeed’s Kenyan visit has gone beyond entertainment. It has shown the growing power of digital creators, highlighted generational differences in celebrity culture, and placed Kenya firmly on the global streaming map. Whether familiar to everyone or not, Speed has undeniably left a mark and Kenya made sure the world noticed.
