The skies over Kenya are in turmoil as flight disruptions continue to hit Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and other airports across the country. Passengers arriving for early flights have found themselves stranded, while airlines scramble to adjust schedules, all because of ongoing industrial action by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), including air traffic controllers.

The Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) has spoken out, describing the situation as serious and warning that the ripple effects of the strike go far beyond delays and cancellations. In a statement issued Tuesday, the pilots’ body said the industrial action is causing significant operational interruptions that are inconveniencing passengers, airlines, and other aviation stakeholders alike.

But KALPA’s concern goes deeper than frustration and missed flights. The association says the ongoing pressure on crews could interfere with scheduling and rest periods, raising the risk of fatigue a safety threat the pilots insist cannot be ignored. The association stressed aviation safety is non-negotiable calling for strict adherence to Flight Duty Period (FDP) limits and mandatory rest requirements.

These rules exist for a reason that is to protect crews, passengers, and the integrity of the aviation system. KALPA warned that no matter the operational pressure, flights must always operate within internationally recognized safety standards. Compromising these limits, the pilots said, is simply not an option.

At the same time, KALPA appealed for calm and constructive dialogue. The association urged all parties unions, government agencies, and airlines to engage in good-faith negotiations to resolve outstanding labour disputes. Without meaningful engagement, the pilots warned, strikes could continue, disruptions could worsen, and public confidence in Kenya’s aviation sector could suffer long-term damage.

For passengers waiting in crowded terminals, and for airline crews juggling impossible schedules, the message is urgent: the skies must remain safe, and the only way forward is dialogue. Delays and cancellations may continue, but safety cannot and will not be compromised.
