A gas explosion sparked a major fire in Donholm estate, Nairobi, sending residents fleeing from their homes and triggering a large emergency response. The blast occurred at a gas cylinder depot located near a petrol station.

The incident began with a loud explosion, followed by several smaller blasts as gas cylinders caught fire. Thick black smoke rose into the sky and could be seen from several parts of the city. Residents described moments of panic as flames spread quickly. Many families ran out of their houses with little more than the clothes they were wearing.

Firefighters, police officers, and medical teams were deployed to the scene within minutes. Authorities sealed off roads leading to the affected area to give emergency crews room to operate and to prevent residents from getting too close. Fire engines worked for hours to contain the blaze and cool nearby structures, including the adjacent petrol station, to stop the fire from spreading.

No deaths have been confirmed yet. Emergency responders said no serious injuries have been reported, although several people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, shock, and minor injuries. Medical teams remained on standby in case more residents required attention.

Officials cautioned that the situation remained dangerous even after the main fire was brought under control. Residents were advised to stay away from the area due to the risk of lingering gas leaks, unstable cylinders, and hidden fires. Those living closest to the depot were instructed not to return home until safety inspections are completed and the area is declared secure.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Investigators are expected to examine safety practices at the gas depot, including storage conditions and licensing, as well as the risks posed by placing such facilities close to residential homes and fuel stations.

Authorities say updates will be provided as investigations continue and once residents are cleared to return to their homes. More information is expected as emergency teams complete their assessments and officials release an official incident report.
