The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its weekly weather advisory for the period between February 17 and February 23, 2026, warning of continued rainfall in several parts of the country even as other regions brace for hot and dry conditions.

In a statement shared on Monday, February 16, Kenya Met indicated that the ongoing rains being experienced across various regions are expected to persist throughout the week. The forecast points to sustained precipitation in Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, including the capital, Nairobi the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of the Southeastern lowlands.

According to Kenya Met, residents in these regions should prepare for continued showers that may vary in intensity, with some areas likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. The advisory underscores the need for farmers, motorists, and the general public to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone zones and areas susceptible to poor drainage.

Counties expected to receive rainfall during the forecast period include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok. These areas, many of which are agriculturally productive zones, are likely to benefit from the continued rains, although excessive downpours could disrupt transport and daily activities.

In contrast, the meteorological department projects generally sunny and dry conditions in the northeastern and northwestern parts of the country. Residents in these regions should expect clear skies and minimal chances of rainfall throughout the week. The dry spell is anticipated to dominate counties such as Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.

Kenya Met further noted that daytime temperatures are expected to rise significantly in several regions, with maximum temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The hot conditions are likely to be felt in the Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as in the Southeastern lowlands and parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya. The Tana Delta and inland areas of Tana River County are also projected to experience elevated temperatures.

Other counties expected to record high daytime temperatures include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta. Residents in these areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

“This Week’s Weather Forecast | 17th–23rd February 2026. Rains are expected to continue over Western Kenya, the Central Highlands including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of the Southeastern Lowlands. In contrast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya are likely to experience generally sunny and dry conditions,” the department stated.

The weekly advisory serves as an important guide for planning in key sectors such as agriculture, transport, water management, and disaster preparedness. Kenya Met continues to encourage the public to stay updated through its official communication channels for any changes or updates to the forecast as the week progresses.
