KWAL Expands Beverage Line-Up, Deepens Distribution of Heineken, Windhoek and Savanna Brands in Kenya

Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) has announced a refreshed portfolio of products in line with its continued drive to meet rapidly shifting demand in the Kenyan market.

Following its first full year of expansion into the premium beer category, the company is deepening availability of its leading brands, Heineken, Windhoek and Desperados through renewed alignments with distributors across the country.

Alongside this, KWAL has introduced several variants aimed at offering various market segments a more diverse portfolio of products. This includes introducing the Drostdy-Hof range of sweet wines, localising production of Savanna Angry Lemon, introducing the non-alcoholic variant Savanna 0.0, and supporting the growth of the iconic Viceroy brand through product enhancements.

“The Kenyan palate is evolving and we are responding by deepening our availability of key brands that speak to emerging consumer trends,” said Lina Githuka, Managing Director, KWAL.

As an example, Ms. Githuka highlighted the rising interest in non-alcoholic variants Heineken 0.0 as well as Savanna 0.0, which allow consumers to maintain a balanced lifestyle without sacrificing taste.

“There is a rising appreciation for non-alcoholic variants as more Kenyans adapt to healthier choices in consumption. We are chasing that ambition by providing a wider range of products in that segment even as we deepen our focus on heritage brands,” said Ms. Githuka.

The company recently re-branded the popular Hunter’s Choice Whiskey and scaled local production of its flavoured gin product Caribia.

In response to increasing challenges around illicit alcohol production in the country, the company reformatted its legacy Viceroy brand by introducing non-reusable features on its bottles, enabling customers to be able to visually assess quality at their preferred purchasing point.

All Viceroy bottles now feature a Non-Refillable Fitment, which is a specialized cap or valve placed on the bottle neck to prevent it from being refilled, to protect product integrity.

The company has also resumed production of Grenadine, a popular cocktail enhancer. This will enable KWAL to continue to tap into the growing demand for mixers as more diverse tastes drive consumption.

These developments complement the company’s growing portfolio of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

This includes: Heineken, Windhoek, Desperados, Kingfisher, Hunter’s Dry Cider, Hunter’s Gold Cider, Savanna Dry, Savanna Angry Lemon, Kibao Vodka, Kibao Gin, Caribia Flavoured Gin, County, Hunter’s Choice Whiskey, Amarula, Viceroy, Nederburg Wines, Durbanville Hills Wines, 4th Street Wines, J.C. le Roux, Caprice Wines and Casa Buena Wines. Non-alcoholic variants include Heineken 0.0, Savanna 0.0, and Chamdor.

In line with this focus, KWAL has stopped production and distribution of the BEST product line, comprising of BEST Gin, BEST Vodka, BEST Whiskey, and BEST Cream, following the end of a manufacturing and distribution agreement.

Illicit alcohol accounts for 60% of the total market in Kenya, according to the latest Euromonitor International data.
