The National Youth Service (NYS) has unveiled a large-scale recruitment exercise aimed at bringing hundreds of young Kenyans into its ranks, in what is being seen as one of its most expansive hiring drives in recent years.

The announcement, made through a public notice dated Tuesday, March 3, signals fresh opportunities for both graduate professionals seeking cadet officer positions and technically skilled individuals interested in private posts.

In total, the agency has declared more than 700 vacancies across a broad spectrum of professional, technical, and support roles. The recruitment targets 250 cadet officers and 500 private personnel, offering a significant boost to employment prospects for young people across the country. The move is expected to not only address unemployment but also equip successful applicants with critical skills through structured training and national service.

According to the notice, the 250 cadet officer positions span diverse professional disciplines. These roles are tailored for degree holders who wish to pursue careers within the disciplined service environment of the NYS while contributing to national development initiatives.

Among the key areas advertised for cadet officers are engineering, accounting, auditing, supply chain management, and information and communication technology (ICT). The service is also seeking clinical officers, laboratory technologists, and project management officers to strengthen its technical and operational capacity.

Further openings exist for economists, marketing officers, corporate communication officers, agricultural officers, veterinary officers, and hydrologists. The recruitment drive also extends to chaplains, legal officers, and registered community health nurses, reflecting the agency’s intention to build a multidisciplinary workforce capable of handling diverse assignments across the country.

Applicants for cadet positions must hold a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Human Resource Management, Public Administration, Library and Information Science, Sports Science, Physical Education, or Community Development, among other approved disciplines.

Beyond academic qualifications, candidates must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years, possess a valid National Identity Card, and hold a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate.

Additionally, all applicants must meet strict medical fitness standards and demonstrate readiness to undertake nine months of rigorous NYS paramilitary training. This training forms a core component of service preparation, instilling discipline, leadership skills, and teamwork.

Alongside the cadet intake, NYS has opened 500 private posts targeting individuals with technical expertise and hands-on skills. These roles are crucial in supporting the agency’s operations in infrastructure development, mechanical services, logistics, agriculture, and other practical sectors.

The breakdown of private vacancies includes 70 drivers and 80 plant operators, reflecting the service’s heavy involvement in construction and transport operations. Skilled trades are also well represented, with 30 mason positions, 10 electricians, 15 carpenters, and 10 plumbers advertised.

Other opportunities include 30 band members, 10 agriculture officers, 20 secretaries, 20 panel beaters, 25 vehicle mechanics, and 20 welders. The largest share of the private recruitment, 160 positions, has been reserved for general duty personnel, who typically support a range of field and operational assignments.

To qualify for private posts, applicants must have attained a minimum grade of D+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent. They must also have completed initial NYS paramilitary training and hold a National Trade Test certificate, craft certificate, or diploma in the relevant field of specialization.

In addition to academic and technical requirements, candidates will be subjected to medical examinations and must meet established criminal record standards, ensuring that only individuals of sound health and integrity are enlisted.

Application Process and Deadline

Interested and eligible candidates have been directed to download and complete the official Application for Employment Form available on the Public Service Commission website.

Completed applications can be submitted either via email or by post. Postal submissions should be addressed to the NYS Commandant General at the National Youth Service Headquarters in Nairobi. The agency has set March 18, 2026, as the deadline for receiving applications, urging prospective candidates to apply well before the closing date to avoid last-minute inconveniences.

With over 700 vacancies on offer, the recruitment drive presents a rare and substantial opportunity for young Kenyans to secure formal employment, gain structured training, and contribute to national service. For many, this initiative could mark the beginning of a stable career path within one of the country’s most prominent youth-focused institutions.
