Avocado: How Kenyan Exporters Are Coping with the Gulf Crisis

Kenya’s booming avocado industry is facing a fresh test as tensions in the Gulf threaten one of its fastest-growing export markets. For years, countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been key destinations for Kenya’s “green gold,” offering farmers reliable demand and attractive prices. But the ongoing Gulf crisis has disrupted shipping routes, increased freight costs, and created uncertainty for exporters.

At FreshGrow Exporters in Murang’a, operations manager James Mwangi scans his phone anxiously for updates from shipping agents. “We used to send containers every week without worry,” he says. “Now, delays and rising costs are eating into our profits.”

The crisis has forced exporters to rethink their strategies. Some companies are turning to alternative markets in Europe and Asia, while others are investing in value addition—processing avocados into oil to reduce reliance on fresh fruit exports. Though these shifts offer hope, they also come with new challenges, including stricter quality standards and higher competition.

Small-scale farmers, who form the backbone of the sector, are feeling the pressure most. With exporters buying less or negotiating lower prices, many farmers are left uncertain about their income. “We depend on avocados to pay school fees and support our families,” says Jane Wanjiru, a farmer in Nyeri. “When exports slow down, everything becomes difficult.”

The Kenyan government has stepped in to support the industry by exploring new trade agreements and encouraging diversification. Officials are also working to streamline logistics and reduce export bottlenecks at ports.

Despite the challenges, industry players remain cautiously optimistic. Kenya’s avocados are still highly valued globally for their quality, and demand continues to grow in emerging markets. For now, resilience and adaptability are proving essential.

As the Gulf crisis unfolds, Kenyan exporters are learning to navigate uncertainty—hoping that their efforts will keep the country’s avocado sector thriving in an increasingly unpredictable global market.
