Kenya Met Issues Warning Over Continued Rainfall In Parts Of The Country This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its latest weekly forecast, indicating that most parts of the country will experience reduced rainfall in the coming days.

The forecast, which covers the period between October 7 and October 13, 2025, shows that although rainfall will persist in some areas, the intensity and frequency are expected to decline compared to the previous weeks.

According to Kenya, a number of regions will still record moderate to heavy rainfall, with totals ranging between 20mm and 50mm during the week. However, the agency cautioned that despite the expected overall reduction in rainfall, some localised areas might experience intense downpours, potentially leading to flash floods and other weather-related hazards.

In its detailed report, Kenya Met warned that some of the heavy rains could be accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and strong wind gusts, which may pose risks to residents, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas.

Motorists and pedestrians were advised to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall and strong winds could lead to slippery roads, poor visibility, and temporary disruptions in transport and infrastructure.

The department highlighted several regions that are expected to experience varying amounts of rainfall during the forecast period. These include the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the Coastal regions, the North-eastern Lowlands, and the South-eastern Lowlands.

In these areas, rainfall is likely to occur in the form of isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Conversely, areas in the Central Highlands and Eastern parts of the Rift Valley are expected to experience cooler and drier conditions in the mornings and evenings, punctuated by occasional light showers.

The North-western and North-eastern regions are projected to remain generally dry and hot, although isolated rainfall events may occur in some pockets.

The department also provided an update on expected temperature patterns across the country. Night-time temperatures are forecast to drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley, and areas around Mount Kilimanjaro.

These cool conditions may result in chilly mornings and misty conditions, particularly in regions such as Nyeri, Murang’a, and parts of Nakuru County.

During the day, however, the north-eastern and north-western regions, such as Mandera, Turkana, Wajir, and Garissa, are expected to experience high daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C, accompanied by dry and sunny weather. Similar warm conditions are expected along sections of the Coastal strip, including Mombasa, Lamu, and Kilifi counties.

In its forecast, the Kenya Meteorological Department made a special mention of Mazingira Day, which will be observed on Friday, October 10, 2025. The day, dedicated to environmental conservation and awareness, is expected to be marked under sunny and dry conditions across most parts of the country.

“As the nation marks Mazingira Day this Friday, 10^th October 2025, weather conditions are expected to be generally sunny and dry across most parts of the country,” the department stated.

Nonetheless, KMD noted that occasional light to moderate rainfall could still occur in a few regions, particularly in Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Highlands, and along the Coastal strip.

The department advised county governments, disaster response teams, and residents in flood-prone areas to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures, especially in areas that may still experience heavy rainfall.

Farmers were also encouraged to take advantage of the intermittent rains to continue with agricultural activities while being mindful of potential disruptions due to changing weather patterns.

The Kenya Met emphasized that it will continue to monitor weather developments closely and issue regular updates to ensure that the public remains informed and prepared.

Overall, the latest forecast signals a transition towards drier and warmer conditions, but with localized rainfall still expected in some regions, a typical pattern as the country approaches the short rain season expected later in the year.
