Christmas is fast approaching, and to many people, this is an opportunity to bond with family, laugh, celebrate, and be merrier than ever. There is, however, a downside to that – you need money.
The last thing you need is to run broke in the middle of the festivities, and this is why you need to plan in advance. And while planning, there are a few ideas that will help save you some bucks to see you through to 2022.
Here are 6 tips to help you survive this December’s festivities:
- Buying Products in Wholesales
Creating a habit of making a monthly date with wholesalers is going to reduce your monthly expenditure in a remarkable way. There are a number of places you can buy certain household products in wholesale and save a significant amount.
There is also the idea of coming together with your friends and buying in cartons or bales then dividing, easily applicable in large households. A number of household goods take long before getting expired and are easy to buy in large quantities. It is, however, important to ensure the product is not contraband.
- Supplementing
Supplementing certain products such as cereals, milk, bread, and margarine could go a long way in cutting down the budget of most households that need around three loaves of bread and packets of milk every day.
Leftover foods, boiled sweet potatoes, and cassavas are not only cheaper but are healthier options. It is also cheaper for large households to bake mandazis that could go for a few days if well stored.
- Make Your Detergents
There are clear steps online on how to make home washing detergent, make some this holiday, it is so affordable to get the chemicals and mix them up.

Be it the multi-purpose liquid soap which will require you to spend 450 shillings for a 20-liter container of soap or the laundry cleaning bar soaps, be assured to get all the tips on YouTube.
- Buy from the Market in Bulk
Items such as cereals, onions, and potatoes last long and it is more affordable to get them in bulk during set market days.
Buy your cereals such as beans, maize, beans, lentils, and groundnuts, in bulk, from the greengrocer markets, it is more affordable there.
- Make Your Snacks
Make the kitchen your friend if you love to snack or have children around for the holidays.
Snacks such as yogurt, milkshake, roasted peanuts, popcorns, crisps, cookies, and fries are easy to make at the comfort of your home, what’s even better if you can engage the children in the activities.
A 250 gram of raw peanuts can go for as low as 30 shillings in the markets while the same quantity from the supermarket may cost you more than 100 shillings. The tutorials are easily available on Twitter.
- Christmas Clothing and Gifts
Traditions such as these die hard and I would therefore not be surprised to realize that there are still children who will cry their eyes out if they are not gifted new clothes to celebrate the birth of the Messiah.
Make sure to buy them as early as now before the prices hike. Visit Eastleigh or Gikomba if you are in Nairobi. You will be sure to find most of the clothes sold in the CBD stalls for more than half the price.
It is good manners to gift during Christmas, if you can afford it, take advantage of the festive season’s promotion to get better deals and if it fails to fit within your budget, well, consider yourself a better gift to this World.
